Impaction

Many campuses have some impacted majors that require additional admission criteria. Several majors are impacted at one or more but not all of the campuses offering the major. Generally, the majors remain the same from one year to the next, but the criteria are subject to change, and you should contact the campus directly for the most current information or go to CSUMentor.edu (search Impaction). Detailed information about the 2009-2010 CSU impacted campuses and majors can be accessed at www.calstate.edu/SAS/impactioninfo.shtml. All majors at San Luis Obispo and most majors at San Diego are impacted. Many majors are also impacted at Long Beach. As a guide for 2007-2008, the following majors were impacted at one or more campuses in addition to San Diego and San Luis Obispo:
  • Apparel Design & Merchandising (San Francisco)
  • Architecture (Pomona, SLO)
  • Art (SD, SLO)
  • Art, Option in Studio Art (Long Beach, SD, SLO)
  • Business Administration (Long Beach, San Marcos)
         (Accounting, Financial Services, and Finance options are impacted at Northridge)
  • Communication (Long Beach, SD)
  • Computer Science (SLO)
  • Criminal Justice/Administration (Long Beach, Sonoma, SD, SLO)
  • Graphic Design (Sacramento, SD, SLO)
  • Health Science (Dominguez Hills, Long Beach, SD)
  • Hospitality and Tourism Management (SD)
  • Interior Design (Sacramento, San Francisco)
  • Journalism (SD, SLO)
  • Kinesiology/Physical Education (Fresno, Long Beach, SD, SLO)
  • Liberal Studies (SD, Sonoma, SLO)
  • Medical Technology (Dominguez Hills)
  • Nursing, Basic (Bakersfield, Chico, Channel Islands, Dominguez Hills, East Bay, Fresno, Fullerton, Humboldt, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Bernardino, SD, San Francisco, San José, San Marcos Sonoma, Stanislaus)

    RN to BSN programs are not impacted at any campus offering the programs.
  • Psychology (Long Beach, SD, SLO)
  • Radio-Television and Film (Long Beach, SD, SLO)
  • Recording Arts (Chico, Dominguez)
  • Social Work (Long Beach, San Bernardino, SD, San Francisco)

California State University, Fullerton is impacted for first-time freshmen. First-time freshmen must apply during the initial filing period and must provide SAT or ACT scores no later than January if applying for fall admission.

California State University, Long Beach is impacted for first-time freshmen and for upper-division transfers and closed to lower-division transfers. First-time freshmen must apply during the initial filing period. First-time freshmen must provide ACT or SAT scores, and it is recommended that these be taken no later than October for fall admission. Upper-division transfers must designate a major at the time of application. Several specific majors are also impacted. Upper-division transfers applying to impacted majors are encouraged to designate an alternate major in case space is not available in their first-choice major.

California State Polytechnic University, Pomona is impacted for first-time freshman applicants and expects to utilize supplemental admission criteria for admission of first-time freshman applicants to the campus. All first-time freshman applicants must apply during the initial admission filing period (October 1 through November 30 for fall) to be considered for admission. SAT or ACT scores are required regardless of GPA and must be received by CalPoly Pomona no later than January.

San Diego State University is impacted at the first-time freshman level. Undergraduates must apply during the initial filing period. All freshmen must provide ACT or SAT scores. It is recommended that you take the test no later than October if applying for fall admission. Many upper division programs are also impacted.

The preferred method of application is through CSUMentor. If you cannot apply online, you should contact the admission office to make special arrangements to apply electronically with campus assistance.

California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo continues to be impacted in all majors. If you are applying to Cal Poly SLO, you must file an application during the initial application filing period. All freshman applicants must provide ACT or SAT scores. It is recommended that you take the test no later than November if applying for fall admission. The preferred method of application is through CSUMentor. If you cannot apply online, you should contact the admission office to make special arrangements to apply electronically with campus assistance.

Sonoma State University is impacted for first-time freshmen in Liberal Studies, Pre-Nursing, and Criminal Justice. First-time freshmen must apply during the initial filing period and must provide SAT or ACT scores. It is recommended that you take the test no later than October if applying for fall admission.
